“My God, are you sure? Murdered?”

“Without any shadow of a doubt, Cindy. We all knew trouble would be coming, but we didn’t know it’d arrive as rapidly as it did, I guess,” Deputy Cartwright said grimly.

Next to him, his horse, from which he had just dismounted, whinnied and stomped impatiently. It was mid-morning, and Cartwright had just ridden out to the small group of properties where Cindy, Chloe, and two other families lived at the end of the dirt road. Sheriff Cole and his other deputies had all ridden to separate outlying properties beyond the town borders to pass on the news about the murders that had taken place the previous night and to warn them about the danger of such killings happening again.

“It must have been those bastards on their dirt bikes,” Yves muttered grimly. “The ones who shot at me. Good thing I chased ‘em off. It’s just a pity I only hit one of their bikes instead of them. If my aim had been a little better, maybe Alice and Bill would still be with us.”

“It wasn’t your fault, Yves,” Deputy Cartwright said. “Don’t even think about blaming yourself. And the coroner thinks they were murdered around three, maybe four o’clock in the morning. That would have been before those bastards came out here, so you taking them out wouldn’t have made a difference in what happened to Alice and Bill.”

“Wh-why did they murder them?” Chloe stammered, her face a mask of shock. “Alice and Bill were good, kind people. Neither of them ever did anything to anyone!”

“They were easy targets, I guess,” Cartwright answered. “Their house was pretty isolated—like your houses out here—so that’s why those guys went after ‘em. We found Bill with his baseball bat lying near his body; I guess he tried to confront the guys when they broke in, so they just shot him. Alice, we found her in her bed, also shot. I guess she woke up when she heard the gunshot that killed her husband, but she didn’t even have time to get out of bed before those sons of bitches shot her, too.”

“What did they take from the house?” Cindy asked. “I’m guessing they took something—that had to have been the reason they broke in, right?”

“They stole everything out of the pantry. They didn’t leave a single morsel of food. They took all of Bill’s wine and whisky, too, and whatever other drinks they could get their hands on. Emptied out of the medicine cabinet, too, it seemed. They took Alice’s jewelry, too, and whatever cash was in the house, but they left the items that would usually be stolen in a robbery: the TVs, laptops, tablets, and phones. I guess they’re wise to the fact that none of that is worth anything anymore.”

“Nonperishable food is going to be worth its weight in gold in the days to come,” Cindy said grimly. “And clearly, these guys understand that. What happened to Alice and Bill is going to be the first of many such incidents, I think.
